Noel Mayfield-Smith has been involved in the Thoroughbred Racing Industry for over 35 years and has been training thoroughbred racehorses for more than 21 years. In 1981, Noel moved to Sydney to be Assistant Trainer to his brother Brian at Nebo Lodge, he left in 1992 to take out his licence to train in Newcastle.
In 2001, Noel was promoted to a No. 1 Trainer by the New South Wales Thoroughbred Racing Board and has won the Hawkesbury Trainers Premiership – 7 years in succession.
Noel has achieved success as Group 1 winning trainer 5 times, and has had 24 stakes winners including::

- Gr 1 Stradbroke Hcp with Landsighting (2000)
- Gr 1 Darley George Ryder with Landsighting (2001)

Noel is the first of only 2 trainers to train the winner of the Princess Series with the history making filly Angst. In 1993 Angst won the AJC Silver Shadow Stks (Gr2), Furious Stks(GR2), the STC Tea Rose Stks (GR2) and the Flight Stks Gr1 .
Noel is a hands-on trainer who is readily accessible to all his owners, and encourages owners input. He is involved in every facet of the running of his stable.
Noel is assisted by his wife Emma, who is also a trainer in her own right. Emma took out her licence in 2007, just before EI hit New South Wales, and continues the line of trainers in her family’s history. Originally from Ireland, Emma is from a renowned horse racing family William & Susan Robinson, her sister Lara is married to David Duggan and they train at Belmont Park in New York, USA. GW (Willie) was an Outstanding National Hunt jockey, partnering Mill House, Mandarin, Team Spirit to name a few. Susan’s father Major Cyril Hall was the founder of the Stud Manager Course at the Irish National Stud, and the Manager for HH Aga Khan’s Gilltown & Sheshoon Stud in Co. Kildare. Emma has extensive international racing and farm experience, having worked on stud farms in Europe for Kristen Rausing at Lanwades Stud and for the de Moussac family at Haras du Mezeray in France. Emma spent two years working as a Veterinary assistant at Castleton Farms. She has worked extensively in Australia, at Arrowfield Stud – yearling preparation, Wrightson Bloodstock in Sydney, Wakefield Stud for 4 years, Widden Stud for 2 years both in their Administration.
Emma is an accomplished rider and rides work every morning, she enjoys the challenge of bringing out the best in every horse in her care. Emma has an outgoing personality which compliments Noel’s cool raceday demeanor and they make an excellent team.
